How Hairbond Holland Was Built
More than a decade of working with Daniel de Ridder, from professional partnership to genuine friendship.
Daniel de Ridder had just returned from holiday.
He went back into his barbershop, opened our three new Hairbond products and started using them on customers.
Forger was the strongest.
Drifter worked well on longer and curly hair.
Vector offered more shine.
No ceremony. No rehearsed praise. Just useful feedback from a barber who knew the products and was prepared to tell me what he saw.
That small message captured why Hairbond Holland has mattered for more than a decade.
It was never only about moving stock.
It was about putting Hairbond into the hands of somebody who understood hair.
The right person in the right market
Hairbond did not enter the Netherlands through a corporate office.
There was no launch committee in Amsterdam. No large presentation. No distributor learning the barbering trade from a catalogue.
It entered through Daniel.
He was already an experienced barber. He understood what customers asked for and what products had to do once they met real hair.
That made him the right person to lead Hairbond in the Netherlands.
Every market is different.
Customers describe their hair differently. Barbers favour different finishes. Some products are understood immediately. Others need to be demonstrated before their value becomes clear.
Daniel knew the Dutch market because he worked in it.
He could explain why one customer needed Shaper Toffee while another would get a better result from Super Fibre.
He understood hold, texture, movement and shine.
More importantly, his advice came from experience.
Building Hairbond Holland
Daniel and I have worked together for more than ten years.
During that time, Hairbond Holland introduced the brand to Dutch barbers, salons and customers.
The products kept their British identity.
The bright packaging.
The distinctive fragrances.
The football connections.
The personality.
But Daniel gave Hairbond a local voice.
That matters when an independent brand enters another country. Shipping boxes is only the first part.
The products still need to be understood.
A barber needs to know which jar belongs on fine hair, which works on thick hair and which finish suits the person sitting in front of them.
Hairbond Holland helped close that gap.
A pallet could deliver the product.
Daniel could explain it.
From football attention to repeat orders
Football helped people notice Hairbond.
Professional players using the products gave the brand visibility and connected it with confidence, performance and British culture.
But attention does not build a lasting business by itself.
A footballer can make somebody notice a jar.
The product has to make them buy it again.
Hairbond Holland connected the story with professional use.
Dutch barbers could test the products. Customers could ask questions. Retailers could understand where each item belonged in the range.
The story created interest.
Performance created repeat orders.
Tested on real customers
Daniel’s barbershop gave Hairbond a proper testing ground.
The products were not judged around a meeting table.
They were judged on short hair, longer hair, curls, fine hair and thick hair.
They were used on men wanting maximum control and men wanting movement without looking as though their hair had been varnished.
Real hair does not read the brochure.
It does what it likes.
That is why professional feedback matters.
A working barber quickly learns whether a product performs, who it suits and where it falls short.
Daniel has always given us that view from the chair.
The new range
His response to Forger, Drifter and Vector showed the value of that relationship again.
Forger delivered the strongest hold and driest finish. It was the easiest product for customers to understand.
Drifter provided softer, more natural control, especially on longer hair and curls.
Vector gave more definition, flexibility and visible shine.
Daniel did not pretend all three products did the same job.
He separated them.
He also identified the commercial challenge.
Forger can be explained in two words: strong hold.
Drifter and Vector require more guidance. Their value appears when they are matched with the right hair and the right style.
That feedback helps us improve our product descriptions, hold-and-shine guide and retailer education.
He did not tell us every product was perfect for everybody.
He told us where each one worked.
That is far more useful.
The independent model
Hairbond has always worked best through independent professionals.
Barbers and hairdressers do more than place products on shelves. They demonstrate them. They recommend them. They explain why one jar will suit a customer better than another.
Hairbond Holland was built around that model.
Daniel did not treat Hairbond as another line in a warehouse.
He understood where the brand came from. He knew how the products performed and could speak about them honestly.
That helped Hairbond establish a place in Dutch barbering without losing its character.
It remained British.
But it no longer felt distant.
More than business
Over the years, Daniel became more than a customer or distributor.
He became a friend.
We have worked through launches, changing markets, new ideas and difficult periods. We have also shared plenty of conversations that had nothing to do with products or orders.
Time alone does not create friendship.
Trust does.
Daniel supported Hairbond because he believed in the products and understood the brand.
I trusted him because he treated Hairbond as something worth building.
The relationship started with business.
The friendship grew from it.
A Dutch home for Hairbond
Hairbond Holland gave a British brand a proper home in Dutch barbering.
It brought the products closer to the people using them.
It gave us practical feedback.
It helped customers choose products based on their hair rather than simply reaching for the strongest hold.
And after more than a decade, Daniel is still opening new jars, testing them on customers and telling us what he finds.
Daniel de Ridder did not merely distribute Hairbond in the Netherlands.
He helped build its Dutch home.
And somewhere along the way, he became a friend.
Order Hairbond in the Netherlands
Customers in the Netherlands can order Hairbond directly through Daniel’s Men’s World Shop at mensworldshop.com. The store is connected to his barbershop in Ommen, so customers are buying from somebody who knows the range, uses the products and can advise on which one suits their hair. Hairbond Holland was built through professional recommendation, and that remains the best way to buy it today.
